This
Roman army is an early imperial army from emperor Trajans
campaign against Dacien around year 100 AD. In this late
period, I feel the army's troop distribution should consist
of more auxiliary troops, and less regulars; then I am
finished, it will consist of 20 regular legionnaires,
2 x 20 auxiliary soldiers, 20 Praetorian, 16 bowmen, 2
bolt-throwers and a tribune with a ridden bodyguard of
8 riders. Maybe I will buy contingents of hired troops
to strengthen them; properly some Germanians.
The
miniatures are from Foundry's old line of EIR. Should
I choose some Romans these days, I would properly choose
their new line of Romans from the Caesarean Roman, also
from Foundry. I feel they are more historic accurate.
How
they were painted
The
colour of Roman Legionaire tunics is a subject of much
discussion, but I have chosen to paint mine off-white,
sice I feel it is more accurate. It also gives me the
possibility to give my praetorians red tunics, so they
will stand out more as the elite troops they are. I
have painted my shields red, with appropriate transfers
from Foundry. The auxiliary troopers shield I have painted
blue; it should properly have been light brown, with
a Gaelic or Germanic design. Another thing I should
have done otherwise, is that their skincolour is light
and pinkish (like my own), which would look better on
a Northeuropean then a soldier from Italy's sun. I have
also tried to paint eyes, but those have not come out
too good- in time I will paint them over with a single
thin stroke instead. Oh well.

Roman
Legionaires.

Roman
Auxiliary. The fellow with 'rabbit-ears' is a Optio,
the second-in-command of a centarii (a 80 man unit).

Auxiliary
bowmen. The light skin is Gaelic, the darker is from
Syria.
